Mental Capacity Act Video

The Mental Capacity Act is the law about how people can be supported to make decisions for themselves, including the right to make mistakes.

The Social Care Institute of Excellence has produced a subtitled video that is mainly made up of people who needs its help, talking about how it works for them, what decisions they make for themselves and what they have had help with.

The Mental Capacity Act has 5 principles.
As one of the people in the video says, 1-3 are all about you, 4&5 are about help to make decisions.

principle 1 – the Act assumes you have capacity as a starting point

principle 2 – Individuals are supported to make their own decisions

principle 3 – people have the right to make unwise decisions

principle 4 – where you cant make decisions alone a decsions is made with you in your best interests

principle5 – The best decision is the least restrictive option
